Video Geometry Cache Research
What is a Video Geometry Cache?
VGC is an abbreviation for Video Geometry Cache. VGC is a new, in-house alternative to Alembic Geometry Caches designed for exporting, storing and playing back pre-calculated fluid simulations.
VGC features:
- A greater than 90% reduction in file size compared to Alembic.
- A GPU based pipeline.
- Support for multiple instances to use the same data stream.
- Support for white water rendering in Unreal Engine.
- Support for mesh LODs.
I need your help to test the quality of Alembic vs VGC. If you are interested and have a spare five minutes, please read the details below.
Who Can tAke Part?
Anyone over the age of 18 who has basic knowledge of using a computer and can understand file sizes in megabytes.
Installation Instructions
The Windows/Linux build can be downloaded below. Once downloaded, please extract the zip files contents.
It is not recommended to run the software from external media.
If you are running this tool on NTU computers, please extract the zip files into the “projects” directory found at “C:\Users\*YOUR USERNAME*\Projects”
The exe might need to be unblocked. Right click the exe file and open its properties, tick unblock and click apply.
Running Instructions
After extraction, please run the executable for your system (.exe for Windows or .sh for Linux).
Once the tool is loaded you can select begin test and follow the instructions given by the tool.
After testing is complete, an online form will open in your default browser. The testing tool will automatically upload the results to this form, please do not change the text. To complete the form, just click submit. Finally, you can return to the program and quit.
If the online form does not open, please make sure you have a default browser set, then click the open form button again.
After the test is complete, the downloaded files can be deleted from your computer.
System Requirements
The testing tool is written in Renpy and displays renders of the fluid simulation from Unreal Engine. As the tool is playing videos, it should be able to run on a range of hardware. If your device can play a 4K YouTube video, this program should work.

By continuing to download and run this testing tool, you agree to the following conditions:
- For non-identifiable data to be collected from you, this includes the following questions:
- Do you have an eye for detail in the following subjects? game development, game art or VFX
- How often you play games on a computer or console?
- Your preference on the quality of a simulation rendered as Alembic vs VGC.
- Your preference on the quality of a simulation rendered as Alembic vs VGC in relation to file size.
- Test completion time and date (used for verification)
- You must not redistribute, reverse engineer, decompile or tamper with the testing tool.
- Redistributing includes sharing screenshots and videos of the tool.
- After the test is completed and results are uploaded to the online form, you must not submit new results.
- After the test, the tool should be deleted from your device, however, it can be run without uploading the results should you wish to see the simulations again.
- The testing tool is provided “as is” with no warranty.
- I am not liable for any damage including data loss, system failure, or corruption.
- You have a right to withdraw your data from this test at any time.
- If the testing tool is still in progress and you don’t want to submit your results, don’t click submit on the online form and close out of the program.
- If you have submitted results please contact me with the completion time, date and code from the form. When submitting results please make a copy of this information.
